Choosing the Right Composite: What to Know First.
Why Material Quality Matters More Than You Think
When it comes to building a fence that lasts, not all materials are created equal. With the growing popularity of Eco-friendly WPC (Wood-Plastic Composite) fencing, it’s easy to assume that any product labeled “WPC” will perform the same. But the truth is - there are major differences in both the boards and the aluminum components that support them. And if you’re not asking the right questions before you buy, you could end up with a fence that fades, warps, or fails far sooner than expected.
🧱 Composite Fence Boards: The Top Layer Makes All the Difference
The biggest factor in WPC board quality? The protective top layer.
• High-quality WPC boards use a co-extruded cap layer that shields the core from UV rays, moisture, and temperature changes.
• Low-grade boards often skip, thin out, or use outdated versions of this layer - making them prone to:
• Fading and discoloration
• Warping or cracking
• Surface erosion over time
This top layer is what keeps your fence looking vibrant and intact for years - not just months. If the boards lack this protection, even the best installation won’t save them from early deterioration.

🏗️ Aluminum Posts & Rails: 6061 vs. 6063 Alloy
The aluminum used in your fence’s posts and rails is just as critical. Many suppliers use 6063 aluminum alloy, which is cheaper but softer and less durable. In contrast, 6061 aluminum alloy offers superior strength and corrosion resistance—especially important for outdoor structures exposed to the elements.
6061 Aluminum Alloy
• Stronger and more rigid
• Better corrosion resistance
• Ideal for structural components like posts and rails
6063 Aluminum Alloy
• Softer and more malleable
• Lower cost, but lower durability
• More prone to bending or denting
And size matters too. Premium systems use 3.5” x 3.5” posts, while lower-end options often cut corners with smaller dimensions that compromise stability.
❗What You Should Ask Before Buying
Before committing to a WPC fence system, ask these key questions:
• Does the WPC board have a co-extruded protective layer?
• What aluminum alloy is used - 6061 or 6063?
• What are the dimensions of the posts and rails?
• Is this the latest generation of WPC technology?
If the answers aren’t clear or the supplier dodges the details, that’s a red flag.
